The now seven day journey was uneventful on the Serena Dawn.
Everyone spent it in their
own ways:
Lyrium sends off the subspace message to the employers and then will
again speak to the Captain (telling him she is through and asking him
to
collaborate her report should he be asked to do so). She will then
remind
him he owes her some money, (as politely as possible..:)) and then
will
study her books and review the files on this expedition again. Working
out
and doing martial arts when the gym is empty. Remaining alone unless
someone seeks her out.
Brenon frequently goes to his room for short periods of time. He can usually be found with Zhirrzh, sparring and such. Prior to jump and landfall Brenon will make an extensive weapons inspection, checking each weapon for any defects or abnormalities possibly caused during flight. He will also set about cleaning the weapons, despite their cleanliness.
One day 3, Raleigh finds Zhirrzh practicing his martial arts in the
empty front cargo
hold and challenges him to some friendly sparring...
Zhirrzh's mind wanders and considers what he might expect on Volturnus
and what he could do to better prepare. Lost in thought and the motions
of his kata, he fails to notice someone walk in. When he hears his name,
he stops and whirls in the direction of the sound, all his senses focused.
He sees Raleigh Thoms watching him. Raleigh asks to join him and Zhirrzh
nods his approval and relaxes.
"It would be my pleasure. How about we start with some stretches to
warm up and then get into some basic exercises?"
Raleigh and Zhirrzh square off, going at 1/4 speed
at first and
practicing simple strikes and kicks. Soon the speed increases
as the
two spar on into the afternoon. Raleigh is amazed with Zhirrzh's
grace and fluidity but finds the attacks to be a bit mundane and
almost predictable. He holds his own quite well against the enforcer,
nearly thinking that maybe he had picked the wrong profession after
all, then it happened.
The big Yazirian moved so quickly it was like trying to follow
him
in the dark with a strobe light on. Just when Raleigh thought
he had
a good block or counter thrown he realized he was a move behind.
And
to think all that time Zhirrzh was just going easy on him. Raleigh
learned more than he bargained on that afternoon, above all else
though was that if things turned bad, he would make sure to stay
out
of this one's way.
...And Telgar and Kah'liss wait until they are alone in their quarters:
After returning to his room, Telgar meets with Kah'Liss.
Happy that his friend was thinking ahead,
Telgar looks over the weapons Kah'liss had taken from cargo.
"Hmmm," he says,"It's always good to keep
something on you. I think I'll take and modify one of these pistol
holders
to wear on my ribs. So, what is your plans, friend?" Telgar
begins
modifying the holster to be worn around the chest so that the pistol
rests
against his ribs. This way he can have his arms folded, yet still
on his
pistol.
<Kah'Liss>
Kah'liss sits in a chair, examining the other
gun and doing a
meticulous job of examining it's surface as he cleans it ... just like
Telgar showed him. He then sits the gun down on the table and
looks at
telgar, "My thoughts exactly. Better to be overprepared than
underprepared." He stands and ables over to Telgar, aiding in
the
modifications to the holster. "I was looking over the designs
that I
created from Grynh's description of the airlock system. I was
pondering a
plan, but it would require the enlisting of one of the more technically
inclined members of our group. I am worried that an unexpected
situation
may arise, and it may be necessary to deal with the door ... in bypassing
the security protocol." He shifts to the rear of Telgar, in his
attempts to
aid the modifications. "Perhaps you can help me in this endeavor.
You are
a far more personable ... person, than I. From the reactions
of our
comrades to me, I do not think that I will elicit the right ... responses."
<Telgar>
Telgar looks at Kah'Liss and listens to his plans.
Then he speaks, "I
knew it! The Techex named Gwarth... I remember him from
my days in the
Corps. He was my Combat Engineer. I think I can talk to
him about helping
us out. It's been a while... about four years I think, since
we last
talked, but I think he remembers me. He seemed to give me a look
like he
did. We can go have a few drinks with him as soon as we get this
holster
finished.... I'm kind of thirsty after Grynh's /long/ and detailed
explanation of the engines. And to think even that couldn't help
them this
time.... should've gone with logic and bet against this ship.
Maybe they'll
still beat the original time somehow and I'll still win some cash...
at
least I didn't bet everything!" Finishes modifying the holster
and puts it
on and inserts the pistol into it. "Looks good... I think it
will work."
Makes sure that the holster is concealed underneath his garment.
"Let's go get a drink shall we?"
<Kah'Liss>
Continuing to assist Telgar until they are finished,
"Actually, I
thought that Grynh's explanations were truly ... fascinating."
He then
steps back and thinks for a moment, then nods, "I ... am not going
to stay
here the entire length of the trip to ease someone's misplaced agitation."
Serena Dawn, Day 7, 04:33
If you are not sleeping, the intercom system as it buzzes to life jostles
you out of your slumber. Did someone say something?
The voice of Captain Joetes buzzes in your room. Blankets on the two
sets of
bunk beds in your quarters begin moving lethargically as others in
your team
shake cobwebs from their heads. "Hate to wake you all up; I thought
I'd let
you sleep in as long as I could, but we'll be coming out of FTL in
about 10
minutes. You all said you wanted a wake up..."
'What a lovely idea that was,' you say as you realize
04:30 came much
earlier than you expected. Oh well, not the first time you've done
this.
Coming out of FTL is usually not a big deal, comparable to a landing
of an
airplane. Usually just a few rumbles, but sometimes the engines cause
a
dreadful grumbling that could be a bit uncomfortable for someone left
unawares. The crew seemed sharp enough though. Should be a breeze.
Fifteen minutes later the Serena Dawn is purring on Impulse power. Balou
chimes in again. "Well, that one was easy. Probably could've slept
through
the entire thing," his chuckle is not amusing. He continues in mocking
luxury liner prose, "Well, on behalf of the crew of the Serena Dawn,
we
would all like to welcome you to the Zebulon System. We should be arriving
at our destination, the lovely planet Volturnus, in 6 hours time. In
the
meantime please relax and enjoy the rest of your flight."
Balou releases the intercom button and grins to
himself, his own eyes red in anger of being up
this early. "I need a coffee. Everything looking good, Grynh?"
The Engineer scans the stress readouts of the engines.
He nods. "Fine
and dandy. Once we get to Volturnus I'll begin the overhaul, we'll
get our
passengers out of here, and head back home."
Balou nods. "Hope they have fun down there." He
stands and heads to the
common room for a coffee.
=====================================
Referee's Notes:
Now that you are out of FTL you can go ahead and do what you want with
your
cargo; load it up or whatever. There won't be any rush to push you
off of
the ship; each time a ship enters FTL, the engines must be overhauled
before
they can reach FTL again. So the Serena Dawn will be in orbit a few
days
while the work is being done. So there's no rush on loading it up ---
in
other words, you can sleep in if you want to.
