Telgar looks in utter amazement
at the site before him. Was it his mind playing tricks on
him? He takes a small sip of water and looks again. It looked
real. Telgar simply says "Whoever has the magnigoggles..." and trails
off knowing that it was implied and understood what would need to
be done.
Raleigh is suddenly aware of how thirsty he is.
No sooner had he noticed the Oasis did it hit him in fact. "Permission
to take us on over?" he states to Brennon, more as a statement than a question.
Upon first seeing the enigma,
a piece of Brenon felt at peace. 'Odd that
such a thing should be found out here'.... He looked to his right
to see
the scorched lands, he looked to his far left only to see an
ocean of sand,
finally he rested his eyes on the palms, wondering what comfort
their shade
might provide... It was all too good. TOO Good. His first instinct
was to
run away from this place. That something wasn't Koshore, perhaps
this was a
trap for the average passerby.......but were there any average
passerbys on
this planet? Perhaps this spot attracts animal forms and what
if the worms
know this....all huddled along the outskirts of the grass;
waiting.....perhaps they could travel under the grassy ground
as well.
Perhaps the pirates know of this spot and know we'll see it.
Perhaps.......
'perhaps''perhaps', Brenon thought to himself. Besides, it was
useless to
contemplate this issue, he could read the look on his crewmates
faces, the
hunger in their eyes. 'Damn, we're pretty much out in the open
where ever
we go, might as well be out in the open and in comfort' Brenon
thought.
"Permission to take us on over?" Raliegh said to Brenon.
Brenon leaned over,
placing his hand on Raliegh's shoulder as he did.
"Granted, but take us to that outcropping of palms on the far
side of the
water body" The next message he whispered to Raliegh, "But keep
your eyes
open. Something doesn't seem quite right about this..."
Upon the approach
to the mini paradise, Brenon will visualy scan the area
the best he can for any oddities, not letting his attention be
distracted
by the scene before him.
For a moment, Raleigh did not interpret the message,
then it hit him. During all this travel, he had actually found himself
forgetting where they were, forgetting who was after them, and forgetting
that some of his friends had died here already.
Shaking his head and smiling a bit, he nodded and
replied, "Gotcha, first sign of trouble and we are outta here."
Leave it too a Combat type to point out the obvious
that only a tech could forget.
As the crew got closer to it's destination, Brenon set
about prepping rifles and placing them near the exit ramp.
The Explorer rolled to a stop and the engine slowly
drulled down to a low hum before it finally silenced.
"I want everyone armed as you disembark the explorer....."
As the Explorer pulls near the Oasis and rolls to
a halt, the team steps out, looking around cautiously, as a cat sneaks
upon its first prey. The grass surrounding the Oasis is not full, but it
is comes in patches. It still looks like Eden compared to the surrounding
landscape. Scattered palm like trees extend 30 meters beyond the Oasis,
which is strangled by a growth of bushes who took root as close to the
waterline as possible.
Slowly, weapons drawn and with cautious eye, the
team makes its way to the oasis. Being sure to spread out in their advance,
Zhirrzh remembers what he saw that night on watch.
"If the ground beneath you trembles," Zhirrzh
warns, although it was already on everyone's mind, "run like hell."
Surely this welcome pit stop in the middle of this barren
land was known to any living things (if there were any) that lived nearby.
This is reinforced by the many tracks that are left around the water. It
is not hard to recognize that this is a popular gathering place by the
locals, whatever or whoever they may be.
Kah'liss reaches the water, Toxyrad gauge in hand,
and reaches down to pull a sample. The water is cool and refreshing. With
the surprises they've seen so far, something in the back of his head expects
some three eyed razor toothed fish to lurch out and drag him in...But the
calm waters remain undisturbed.
After a minute, the Toxyrad gauge lights green and
Kah'liss studies the short report. He then looks up to the rest of the
team with what can only be a grin.
"She's fresh, potable
water, for sure."
Raleigh took a few laps around the rig, looking for
noticable problems, Raleigh waited just long enough for a return on the
Toxy guage before heading for the water.
Dropping to his knees at the edge of the pool, he
immersed his hands in the liquid and rubbed his face. Normally he would
not waste the precious water in such an environment but something got the
best of him.
Once satisfied with his "bath", Raleigh turned and
looked back to Brennon.
"Ok, now what do we do?"
Zhirrzh opens the door and steps out onto the green
grass. He slowly flexes his toes, clenching the grass and savoring the
feeling of peace it brings. He stands there for a moment more, then walks
over to a nearby tree and sits down with his back against the trunk. A
great sigh of contentment escapes from Zhirrzh and he relaxes visibly against
the tree. His eyes close and his breathing comes regularly. Relaxed and
content, Zhirrzh
savors the green smells.
"I really needed this," he mumbles.
Brenon watched intently
as Kay'liss tested the water. A green light popped
up and Brenon let out a sigh of relief. She's good. Immediately,
Raliegh
was at the edge of the water, wetting his mug.
"Kay'liss, make sure
you jot down these coordinates and run a few more
tests while you're at it. I need to try an get a message back
to Streel,
let them know what has happened now that things have simmered
down a bit.
Feel free to break out some rations."
Brenon heads back
to the explorer and grabs the Sub Space Radio. He then
begins to align the dish and then activates the radio.... Here's
the
message Brenon will send. "Streel Corp, this is Team 2, Expedition
team
Volturnus. We have crashed on planet's surface. Serena Dawn was
attacked by
unknown assailants which forced expedition team to depart Serena
Dawn. Fate
of Serena Dawn is unknown. We have two team members dead, Lyrium
and
Rolgar. Request immediate evac. Current position....<Brenon
gives current
position>. Brenon out."
"Well, let's hope they
get that and pray it's not intercepted by the
pirates......"
"Zhirrzh, if you're
up to it, see what you can do about making the
explorer's thumb a little less sore."
"Doesn't look like
food will be an issue........" Brenon half says as he
stares at the many tracks going this way and that.
After Kah'liss gave the okay for the water, Zhirrzh climbed
up from his little patch of grass and began scouting the area. He found
an abundant set of tracks scattered over the entire area of the oasis,
but nothing extraordinary. A quick-footed lizard scampered past him and
Zhirrzh decided that maybe a few snares or other traps should be set. A
few specimens for study should prove beneficial.
Zhirrzh glanced up from where the lizard had run
off to and gave Brenon a nod. "I'll see what I can do."
Looking around, Zhirrzh finds a spot where the Explorer
could be parked and best concealed. He walks over to Raleigh and taps the
tech on the shoulder to draw his attention.
"If you could, I'd like you to move the Explorer
over there." Zhirrzh points to his intended hiding spot.
As Raleigh moves the Explorer, Zhirrzh begins gathering
the debris he'll need to camouflage the vehicle. A little while later,
Zhirrzh steps back from his work and nods in satisfaction. "That should
do for the time being."
Zhirrzh picks up some of the remaining debris and
starts to fashion four small snares. He looks up after finishing his first
snare and speaks out to the group.
"If someone isn't too busy, I could use a hand.
I'm going to lay a few snares for some of the smaller animals and I'd also
like to have a couple of shallow pits on the edges of the oasis. I need
someone to dig while I finish these snares. Anyone up for it?"
